Now-a-days, new movies come out almost every weekend, but only a few of them are as well made and exciting as Elizabeth: the Golden Age. Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, and Clive Owen star in this tale of heartbreak and a country in turmoil. Although this is the sequel to Elizabeth, released in the late 1990’s, it is not too difficult to follow the plot even without having seen the first installment.
The plot centers around the affairs of Queen Elizabeth I during the Spanish Inquisition. The film explores the drama of the Queen’s court and the confinement of being royal. Unlike some movies this film is actually somewhat historically accurate not just loosely based on a historical figure.
As you watch it you can’t help but get caught up in the story. It might help to know some historic background, as some aspects of the film might be confusing to those that have only this movie as a reference to this time in history. An example would be the story behind the elaborate wigs and the fact that Queen Elizabeth I lost most of her real hair when she suffered from an illness.
The many talented actors create a fine performance and weave an excellent story. The movie portrays the strong character of the real Elizabeth I who dedicated her life to her country. Elizabeth: the Golden Age has great visual effects and sweeping cinematics. The costumes really set the time period and reflect the styles of the 16th century. The story is also very inspirational as stirring music plays in the background of captivating shots.
With the spectacular naval battle scenes and lots of intrigue, Elizabeth: the Golden Age is a great film that will leave you with goose bumps.
